
Extreme Overbalance Perforating (EOB) couples the proven technology of Tubing Conveyed Perforating with high pressure injection to provide an effective stimulation. The basic premise is to achieve horizontal extension of the perforation planes in conjunction with near wellbore clean-up; all without the massive liquid injection associated with conventional stimulation methods. Originally developed the early 1990’s, EOB has been fine tuned using experience and adaptations that make this process an economical and productive completion technique. EOB is ideal for depleted; fluid sensitive; and close water contact reservoirs; but can be applied to normally and over pressured reservoirs as well. Initial injection rates of up to 140 bpm have been attained; this ensures that all perforations are treated rather than the breakdown of only a few to take the majority of the treatment. Negative skin is a common denominator to most EOB jobs. Applicable lithology includes but is not limited to Dolomites; Limestones; Sands; and Shaley Sands. This technology can be utilized and applied where zonal permeability is as low as the 0.1md range; and in Dolomitic and Limey conditions; where the permeability is much lower but accompanied by secondary permeability such as joints and fractures.
The foremost criteria in designing a successful EOB completion is to ALWAYS achieve a bottom hole treating pressure of at LEAST 0.4 psi/ft ABOVE the frac gradient. This process is one of the few things in life where “more is better”. Secondly; and often neglected; is to limit the incompressible spearhead to 300 feet or less. Friction loss is an enemy of EOB. Any liquid (KCl, SW, methanol, acid, etc.) that is compatible with the formation is acceptable as the spearhead.
